Full Steam Ahead for South East London CAMRA Special Brew!
January AGM held at Southwark Brewery - minutes now available.
Thank you to everyone who attended our AGM in January – we teamedĀ up with Bermondsey-based Southwark Brewing to create a one-off cask ale.
Lucky branch member Brian Fretwell won the chance to collaborate with the brewery to create the limited edition beer.
Brian commented: “having previously only made home brew, it was fantastic to have the opportunity to help produce a brand new beer in one of our local breweries. I particularly wanted to create a seasonal beer and was very pleased with the outcome”.
The result was a 4% ABV hoppy, chestnut ale with a red hue, made with English malts and West Coast American hops, and proved very popular with those attending the branch AGM.
The beer was named Southern Pacific 4449 Red which train buffs may recognise as a reference to the historic US red and orange steam loco – appropriate enough given Southwark Brewing’s location within a railway arch and Brian’s love of trains!
Producing a one-off beer for the event was the brainchild of brewer Peter Jackson of Southwark Brewing who said: “as a relatively new brewery, we were delighted to be asked to host our local CAMRA branch’s AGM and hit on the idea of making the occasion extra special by having a unique beer brewed on our pilot plant. It was great to see the beer going down so well on the night”.
SE London CAMRA Branch Chair, Steve Silcock, added: “the brewery made a great, novel venue for our annual meeting and also enabled us to support one of the newest cask brewers in our area. Having our own special beer was the icing on the cake!”
